Hathurusingha submitted resignation during SA tour – BCB president

Nazmul Hassan also said the coach was upset about what some Bangladesh players said about him in the media, but didn’t mention names or the particular incident

Chandika Hathurusingha sent in a letter wanting to step down from the post of Bangladesh head coach during the team’s tour of South Africa last month, according to BCB president Nazmul Hassan. He said that Hathurusingha had not discussed the matter with the board since then, but said he may be in Dhaka after November 15.Hassan said that Hathurusingha didn’t provide a reason for wanting to resign, but had done a similar thing in August 2016 when Sri Lanka Cricket offered him the head coach’s position.”He gave me a letter in the first week of October, possibly after the second Test [against South Africa] and definitely before October 15. He didn’t specifically mention a reason, so I can’t really say what has happened before I can speak to him. He said he is no longer interested.”He had an offer from Sri Lanka last year; the country’s president had called him to give him the proposal. He showed me offers from other countries. But now I am unable to say why he is leaving – whether it is a better offer, family reasons or something else that is bothering him.”Hassan said that Hathurusingha has stopped all communication with the BCB, except for taking one call in which he apparently said he will arrive in Dhaka later this month.”We felt it was not appropriate to speak about this [resignation letter] during a series. I think we got him once on the phone, and he said he is coming after November 15. But he hasn’t communicated with us since.”If someone doesn’t want to stay, what will we do with his notice period? What we can say is that he is a professional. Suddenly he gives us a letter and is sitting quietly in Australia. It is quite unusual. He lets us know if something is bothering him but during the [South Africa] series, he didn’t communicate with us.”Hassan said that Hathurusingha was upset about what some players said about him in the media. He also said that he had confronted the players in front of Hathurusingha once on the matter, although he didn’t mention names or the particular incident.”[Hathurusingha] was hurt by things said about him by a couple of cricketers. I wasn’t in South Africa but if he felt that they are not listening to him, why would he run the team? I am just giving an example. It might be a reason [for his resignation letter], although there might be a personal reason too.”He didn’t mention the media in the past but he used to say why do the players say such things in the media? I sat with him and the players a number of times, asking them why they lie in the media.”Hassan ruled out the theory that Hathurusingha is using his resignation letter as a bargaining chip. “I am sure it has nothing to do with bargaining. Money isn’t an issue.”

'Hard work and a load of fun' – Moores on Nottinghamshire's success

Two years after his second exit as England coach, Peter Moores is once again flourishing in the domestic arena

Two years after his second exit as England coach, Peter Moores is once again flourishing in the domestic arena as his county Nottinghamshire secured the limited-overs double of T20 and 50-over success, with the Division Two County Championship title likely to make it a treble over the next few weeks.Whatever the limitations that led to a brace of ignominious departures from the England job in 2008 and then 2015, Moores has brought success wherever he has gone in county cricket. He won the Championship with Sussex in 2003, with Lancashire in 2011 and has now marshalled a dominant season at Trent Bridge, the latest installment being the 22-run victory in the NatWest t20 Blast final over Birmingham, after taking the head coach role at the end of last season when the team were relegated in the Championship.”You don’t imagine you’re going to have a season when you win both one-dayers. You target them, of course you do,” Moores said. “I think when we started we had a real focus on trying to get promoted out of the second to the first division. The one-day trophies, we knew we were a good side, so we were going to go hard at it.”Credit to the lads, they’ve worked really hard and probably hit more balls than anybody else. We’ve done loads of work going through, we’ve had a load of fun doing it, and somewhere along the line we’ve found this way of people delivering when it really counts in pretty much all forms of the game at the moment.”A player who made his debut during Moores’ first spell as England coach in 2008, and returned briefly in the Trevor Bayliss era after occasionally frequenting the Andy Flower team, is allrounder Samit Patel who played a starring role on Finals Day to continue an impressive season. He was Man of the Match in the final for his 64 off 42 balls – after Notts had been 30 for 3 – and two direct hit run-outs, while he is the team’s leading run-scorer in the Championship with 824 runs at 68.66.Since Patel was surprisingly recalled for the 2015-16 series against Pakistan and South Africa – where he played one Test in Sharjah – the role of left-arm spinning allrounder has gone to Liam Dawson. Patel has made no secret of his frustrations at being overlooked by the selectors and earlier this season made the point of stressing how he has never missed a match due to fitness issues.”He’s always been a really good player, there’s no doubt about that, but I think he’s found a new level of tempo, maturity whereby he’s becoming very consistent as a batter,” Moores said. “He’s got his own style of play which I actually think internationally suits well because he sits back a little bit, he doesn’t go at the moving ball quite the same as some people and he’s a bloody good cricketer.”I can hear his frustration at times because he’s played well, the key is to keep doing it, keep doing that level of work. You’ve had all sorts of things talked about Samit and his fitness and whatever, but he works hard and people give him credit for. He plays a long day today, he does the allrounder’s role and he’s as fresh now as he was at the start of the day. He’s not a bloke who cramps up or anything like that, he just kind of does it and you’ve got to give him credit for that.”Moores has always maintained that the judgments made on him as an international coach after his difficult stints were misplaced and admitted the most hurtful aspect was blame being attached to his style of coaching.”The hardest thing with that was the whole concept that you coach with some restrictive style or whatever, which was completely unfounded by whatever any player said or what actually went on, that was the most hurtful thing,” he said. “When somebody decides they don’t want you as a coach then you’ve got to take it on the chin.”In terms of a return to the international stage in the future, Moores wasn’t looking too far ahead. “I don’t plan like that, honestly. I do what I’m doing at the time and see what comes along. I’m loving coaching at the moment. But I could coach the under-12s and have a great time, if I’m honest. I’m loving my time at Notts so I’m just going to get stuck into that, enjoy it and take it from there.”

WA seamers rout Tasmania for 63 with pink ball

Chasing 365, Tasmania collapsed to 63 all out in 23.1 overs to hand the hosts a 301-run victory in Perth

Western Australia’s seamers made a fearful mess of Tasmania to complete an enormous victory for the Warriors in the day-night Sheffield Shield match at the WACA ground. In the only one of the opening three Shield fixtures to make it into a fourth day, the Tigers were set 365 to win after Mitchell Marsh’s declaration, but were never in the contest following a rush of wickets against the new pink ball that was so dramatic as to reduce the visitors to 9 for 35 in the 17th over. Incumbent Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade one of the batsmen caught up in the maelstrom.A modicum of face was saved by the last pair of Beau Webster and Andrew Fekete, who added 28, but they served only to slightly reduce the margin of defeat against a WA side that carried on the momentum of a win in the domestic limited-overs tournament that started the season.Wickets were shared evenly by the Warriors, but the national selectors will be most pleased with the performance of Nathan Coulter-Nile, who looms as a likely reserve option behind the first-choice pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.

Agar, Cartwright help Scorchers reclaim top spot

Ashton Agar followed his three wickets with an unbeaten 26 in a 71-run stand with Hilton Cartwright to seal Perth Scorchers’ chase of 113 on a two-paced pitch in Alice Springs

The Report by Daniel Brettig13-Jan-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAshton Agar and Hilton Cartwright lifted Perth Scorchers back to the top of the Big Bash League table by negotiating a tricky chase against Adelaide Strikers on a challenging surface at Traeger Park in Alice Springs. The first BBL match to be played in the Northern Territory was a low scoring affair between two of the competition’s strongest bowling and fielding line-ups, with Agar’s three wickets contributing to a Strikers collapse before he aided Cartwright in ensuring the Scorchers did not go the same way.Alex Carey had given the Strikers a decent start before the Scorchers, led by Ashton Turner in the absence of the captain Adam Voges – suspended for a second slow over rate offence during the tournament, regathered themselves. The Scorchers then appeared to be struggling in the pursuit thanks to the now familiar brilliance of Rashid Khan, but some sensible batting by Cartwright and Agar took them to a victory that also won them the Jason Gillespie Trophy.Adjusting to the slow lane
Coming from Adelaide Oval and the WACA ground, these two sides are used to swift and bouncy pitches with sleek outfields. Neither were evident in Alice Springs, leaving the Strikers and Scorchers unsure of what a strong score would be. Given this was the first BBL match to be played at the ground, there was also a lack of statistical information available, making this a case of the awkward unknown for players, coaches and analysts alike. The fluent Carey was able to get into stride with regular boundaries and had some initial support from Jake Weatherald, a Northern Territory product, but after his dismissal trying to sweep Will Bosisto the Strikers seemed eager to accelerate in a manner that suggested they felt they needed a score in the region of 160 or more.Falling apart through the middle
As each wicket fell, the Strikers grew more impatient, and it showed in their shot selection, which was chaotic at best. This was epitomised by Jake Lehmann, who to his fifth ball and with the scorecard reading an uncertain 4 for 81, offered up an attempt to reverse paddle Agar that lobbed in the general vicinity of Mitchell Johnson. His resulting one-handed catch was outstanding, but was only made possible by the sort of shot that betrayed an addled mind.In all, the Strikers would lose all 10 wickets for 63, having been nicely placed at 0 for 49. Among all collapses in the history of the BBL, only one by Melbourne Renegades in the fourth edition of the tournament was more catastrophic. Agar, Tim Bresnan and Matthew Kelly all contributed with wickets and parsimony, in weather that forced Kelly to seek treatment for heat exhaustion after the innings had concluded.Spinning around
In order to win, the Strikers needed a couple early wickets in the Powerplay and then to have Rashid Khan weave his spell on a surface that would offer some assistance. While unlucky when the umpire Donovan Koch appeared to miss a thin edge down the leg side by Bosisto off Michael Neser first ball of the innings, the first part of the equation went their way when Bosisto clumped the same bowler to mid-on. Ben Laughlin then held an outstanding catch, diving across from mid-off to see off Michael Klinger, giving Rashid his opening.Used in one over spells by the stand-in captain Colin Ingram, Rashid fizzed a legbreak past Cartwright, and in his second he rushed a googly into Turner’s leg stump soon after Cameron Bancroft had tugged Peter Siddle to short midwicket. Agar’s left-handedness was something of an advantage, but even he was exceedingly fortunate in edging a legbreak past the stumps as Rashid continued to tease.Cool heads and no-balls
As Cartwright and Agar pushed towards their goal, Siddle probed for a wicket. He had reacted with incredulity when the umpire John Ward ignored a first-ball lbw appeal against Turner, saying the batsman had managed to get some bat on a delivery clocked at 141kph. Ward was very alert, however, when Siddle thought he had Cartwright taken on the midwicket boundary with 24 runs still required. Siddle had already begun to celebrate when he noticed Ward’s arm outstretched for a no-ball, and replays showed it to be a correct call on the Victorian seamer’s front foot. When the resulting free-hit was clumped down the ground for a six by Cartwright, the equation had lost most of its tension, leaving Agar and Cartwright to cruise home. They were aided by another no-ball along the way, this time against Laughlin for a high full toss. The Scorchers were thus rewarded for keeping calm in the chase where the Strikers had lost their composure in trying to set a target.

Ashwin to try legspin in the IPL

The India offspinner has been working on expanding his repertoire and has already shown hints of it in the ongoing domestic one-day tournament

With limited-overs cricket becoming an increasingly unfamiliar environment for fingerspinners, R Ashwin has amped up his efforts to remain relevant. Over the past few years, he has been working towards becoming a wristspinner and was confident enough to try those variations in a domestic one-day match against Gujarat on Monday. He finished with figures of 2 for 38 in 9.1 overs as Tamil Nadu won the match by 76 runs.Ashwin was one of the two top-ranked bowlers in Test cricket when he was given a break from India’s ODI squad. Legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal and left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav were brought in to fill the void but now have become an intrinsic part of why India are so hard to beat in 50-overs cricket. To keep pace with the competition, Ashwin has been practicing legspin himself. “This is part of my plan going into the IPL,” Ashwin told reporters on the sidelines of Tamil Nadu-Gujarat Vijay Hazare Trophy match. “I am just trying to build my armoury. I used to bowl good legbreaks with my offspin action when I was playing league cricket in Chennai. Over a period of time, in a search to get my stock ball right, I obviously had to cut out a lot of those things. I had possessed a lot more variations. Having bowled offbreak as the stock ball for almost 10 years, trying to change things around is challenging. But I don’t really settle for anything. At no point in my career, I thought ‘this is it’ and decided to settle for the rest of my career.”Ashwin said he has largely been working alone. “As of now everything is cooked by me. I try to take feedback from our coaches in my academy. L Balaji has been of great help. First time I was bowling legspin, we were working on some actions on how to gain momentum. How I can make a repeatable action work for me. For example, my arm doesn’t go 45 degrees which is perfect for a legspinner. I am more upright. I have to adjust my action. It has been a painful ride. One day it will come out well in the nets, and the next day it won’t come out all right. It will be frustrating. I have gone through the entire journey and have reached a place where I can land the ball where I want to.”The IPL presents the next opportunity for Ashwin to make a case for himself in limited-overs cricket. Although this season, when he goes home to play in Chennai, he would line up as part of the opposition: Kings XI Punjab bought him for INR 7.6 crore (USD 1.18 million approx).”I was a tad disappointed because I have been here for the last ten years,” Ashwin said. “Literally, I have owned that space around Chepauk. Every time I came on to bowl, the kind of roaring and cheering I got will always stick on in my head. Coming back there, to play against CSK, will probably motivate me more.”

Consistent form gives us good chance – Domingo

Ahead of South Africa’s departure for the World T20, coach Russell Domingo feels that his side’s consistency in the shortest format will hold them in good stead at the tournament

Firdose Moonda10-Mar-20164:14

‘We have to learn from our mistakes’ – Du Plessis

For all the unwanted accolades Russell Domingo earned this summer – he oversaw South Africa’s longest winless streak in Test cricket since readmission in which they were also bowled out for their two lowest scores – he remains their most successful major tournament coach and therein lies the chance for him to declare this season a success. Domingo has been in charge for two ICC tournaments, the World T20 in 2014 and the 2015 World Cup. South Africa reached the semi-finals in both tournaments and he has reason to believe they can go one, or even two better at the World T20 in India.”We’ve got a chance. We are one of the most consistent sides in this format. We can go there very confident,” Domingo said on the eve of South Africa’s departure for India. “We have prepared very well. We have some of the best players in the world. We’ve got a seriously good side. We’ll be there and thereabouts.”Cleared action doesn’t guarantee Phangiso spot in XI

Despite having his bowling action declared legal, Aaron Phangiso may still be on the sidelines for the World T20, as he was during the 2015 World Cup. Phangiso was the only member of South Africa’s 2015 party who did not play a single game and has since struggled to establish himself against an array of personal problems. He remains back-up to Imran Tahir.
“I can’t guarantee anybody a spot. We need to get there and play our best starting XI,” Russell Domingo, South Africa’s coach said.
Phangiso’s remodeled action has not yet been tested in international cricket. He was rushed through two tests after being reported for a suspect action during a domestic game last month. Phangiso’s action was found to be illegal after a first round of tests.
Domingo explained Phangiso will get a chance to put his new action to the test in the warm-up matches before South Africa decide on their final XI.
Phangiso is one of only two black African players in the squad and there could be pressure to play him as the country’s sports minister got involved in the controversy around the bowler’s action.

South Africa signed off on their home season with a 2-1 series defeat to Australia, but victories over England and India in India in the shortest format would seem to put them among the favourites. However, a difficult few months headlined by Test defeats and talk of AB de Villiers’ workload management means they will fly under the radar for a change and Domingo is quite happy with that. “We are all pretty chilled. I don’t think there is a weight of expectation around our team or any of the teams because of the nature of the competition,” he said. The structure of the tournament – two groups of five teams with each team playing each other only once – means the chances of slipping up are greater, so Domingo is encouraging his team to “keep it simple,” and not look for a special formula. “You can’t get too fancy, you can’t get too funky. There is no magic wand to wave. The sides that do the basics really well in high-pressure games, they usually come out on top,” he said.South Africa were that side for five successive limited-overs matches at home when they came from behind to beat England 3-2 in an ODI series and win the first two T20s. All those wins and the first against Australia came chasing, which has allowed South Africa to bury one ghost but resurrect another. “We’ve chased really well which is a big bonus but we need to defend a score. We need to find ways of scraping,” Domingo said.Domingo’s way of helping them find that is to ensure they have clarity of thought rather than an overload of technical expertise. “I can’t hit my players if they bowl a no-ball, or slap them on the wrist,” he said. “If you make a mistake, the last thing a player wants to hear is, ‘Why did you bowl that?’ Encouraging them and working on their thought processes is the key. If your thoughts are clear you have got a better chance of executing your plan.”Faf du Plessis has already bought into that philosophy and emphasised that the fundamentals should be South Africa’s focus as they head to into the World T20: “This team has had really good results in the subcontinent but we’ve got some of work to do to make sure we are ready for that first game. We’ve got to work on the basics.”

Sri Lanka's best chance to challenge Kohli-less India

The visitors, buoyed by the return of Angelo Mathews, Asela Gunaratne and Danushka Gunathilaka, seek to improve a woeful 2017 ODI record

The Preview by Sidharth Monga09-Dec-20175:12

Agarkar: Sri Lanka need leaders to show the way forward

Big pictureSri Lanka can breathe easy. And not just because they are out of Delhi. Virat Kohli will not be breaking any more records on the rest of their tour. That’s where the good news ends, though. The last time Sri Lanka played ODIs in India, India’s new captain Rohit Sharma scored 264. Also the most successful IPL captain, Rohit, now gets to lead India in limited-overs cricket as Kohli rests, but the onus is on Sri Lanka to make this series less tedious than the speculation around Kohli’s wedding. An indication of how unsure Sri Lanka are in ODI cricket is that until recently, their new captain Thisara Perera struggled to find a place in the side. Visiting India for ODIs is a daunting task at the best of times, and when you are on a 12-match losing streak and when India are on a seven-series winning streak, even miracles might not be enough. A more realistic target for Sri Lanka is to deny India a whitewash, which is what they need to become the No. 1 side in ODIs again.Normally, winning the toss and chasing in dewy grounds would be Sri Lanka’s best chance to deny India, but the two matches in India’s north, likely to be severely affected by dew, will begin two hours earlier than usual. That said, India will not want to take Sri Lanka lightly, especially with the return of Angelo Mathews, Danushka Gunathilaka and Asela Gunaratne.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
India: WWLWL
Sri Lanka: LLLLLIn the spotlightAn opportunity to bat in the India top order – with Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit and Kohli – doesn’t come easy. The next three ODIs are an invitation for someone to stake a strong claim. Might it be another chance for Ajinkya Rahane, who has scored runs as an opener but hasn’t done enough to dispel the notion that he struggles to push on once the ball gets softer? Might this be an opportunity for Shreyas Iyer to get a decent run in India’s limited-overs sides? Or will Dinesh Karthik present a case to become India’s long-term No. 4?AFP

Niroshan Dickwella can often get away with intemperate batting in Tests, but in ODIs he has to play a more important, more responsible role. He is Sri Lanka’s second-highest run-getter this year, and one of only three players from Sri Lanka to have played more than 20 matches this year. How well he goes at the top of the order will often determine how well Sri Lanka go.Team newsRahane is the frontrunner to take Kohli’s place in the XI with the other ODI specialists slotting right back in. Gunaratne, who injured his hand during the first Test on India’s tour of Sri Lanka, should regain his middle-order spot now that he is fit. Sri Lanka’s second-highest wicket-taker this year, Suranga Lakmal, is available too. They will also be boosted by the availability of Mathews to bowl a few overs.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Danushka Gunathilaka, 3 Sadeera Samarawickrama/Kusal Perera/Lahiru Thirimanne, 4 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Thisara Perera (capt.), 7 Asela Gunaratne 8 Chaturanga de Silva/Sachith Pathirana/Dushmantha Chameera, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Nuwan Pradeep, 11 Akila DananjayaPitch and conditionsThe first-innings scores in the only three ODIs in Dharamsala have swung wildly between 190 and 330, making it hard to predict the typical nature of the surface. Usually, though, the only demon ODI tracks in India hold is slowness, which is not always the issue in Dharamsala. Thisara said it was a good batting pitch.Stats and trivia The last major team Sri Lanka beat in an ODI was India, in the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Sri Lanka have been whitewashed 5-0 three times this year. Angelo Mathews needs 88 runs to become the 10th Sri Lankan to 5000 ODI runs. He will be the slowest Sri Lankan to the mark. Sri Lanka last won an ODI in India in the World Cup of 2011. They last beat India in India in 2009. Since then, their record in India has been 1-8.Quotes”We have a couple of players who have come from injury. Balanced side at the moment. Hopefully we can do something special, I hope.”

Butt takes Lahore Whites into semi-final

Salman Butt’s unbeaten 85 carried Lahore Whites into the final four on a day that saw Peshawar and Rawalpindi eliminated

Salman Butt walks back after his hundred•AFP

Salman Butt continued to shake off a wretched Quaid-e-Azam trophy campaign. His second unbeaten half-century in three games helped Lahore Whites trounce Peshawar by 27 runs. Butt’s 58-ball 85 took his side to the top of the standings. His fellow opener Kamran Akmal also joined in to make a 40-ball 52 as the Whites notched up 163. In response, the struggling Peshawar – who now have one win in six matches – could not find a single batsman to score over 25. That meant the chase never really took off. Lahore’s bowlers picked them off at ease with Umaid Asif starring with four for 26 to break the back of the Peshawar chase. Ehsan Adil and Asif Ali took two wickets apiece as Peshawar were cleaned up for 136, with their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals officially extinguished.A century stand between Umar Amin and Zain Abbas wasn’t enough for Rawalpindi as they lost to Faisalabad, thereby falling out of contention for the last four. Amin and Abbas scored 67 and 62 respectively, with Sohail Tanvir adding a quickfire 32 off 16 as Rawalpindi surged to 193. It was, surprisingly, the international stars in Faisalabad’s bowling attack who were the most expensive, with Faheem Ashraf, Saeed Ajmal and Yasir Shah conceding a whopping 115 runs in their combined 11 overs. But Faisalabad gave the daunting chase a right go, thanks largely to a 43-ball 87 from Sohaib Maqsood, even as the top order fell cheaply around him. By the time he was dismissed, he had contributed 87 to Faisalabad’s score of 108, but 86 were still required off a mere seven overss, the balance firmly in favour of the hosts. But sensational hitting from Khurram Manzoor – who finished with an unbeaten 52 off 25 – and Ashraf helped Faisalabad sneak home with a ball to spare and strengthen their hold on a semi-final position.
